Title

Two Mud Pattens

Description

These were boards of wood 28 cm x 28 cm and 8 mm thick which oystermen/fishermen attached to their shoes/boots to provide easier access across shoreline mud when the tide was out. The four corners of the board have been removed by cutting across about 30 mm from each end. There are four holes drilled through the board two each holding a thick piece of sisal, ultramarine in colour and c.12 mm thick. The underside shows three pieces of wood nailed on in an H shape to act perhaps in a raising fashion i.e. to provide less chance for the board to sink in. The user placed each foot under the two pieces of thick sisal and then wrapped the attached length of thinner white sisal around the lower leg.
