Title

Hay Fork or Pitchfork

Description

Comprises a central wooden shaft probably of elm with a cast or wrought iron fitting at the lower end of the shaft. This has five tines. At the top of the shaft is the handle which is a mix of wood and metal. It stands 1.1 m in height. The upper part of the handle in wood has a lateral split. The wooden shaft has been stamped with 'COX'. The lower fitting is stamped with the manufacturers name but it is too worn to be legible. This fork was apparently used on a farm in the Chidham area. Its purpose was to toss hay over a field to assist its drying or to toss hay into a rick. Good condition although some of the tines are bent out of alignment and there is a furniture beetle flight hole.
